The following Florida Veteran is being honored in this project:



1st LT. FRANCIS Marion MITCHELL - KIA

 

Age at enlistment : 23

Born : 1836 in Alabama

Died : 5 November, 1863 near Missionary Ridge, TN at age 27

Final Resting Place:

Marriage:  Unmarried

 

Enlisted 6/6/1861 at Tampa.  Was elected 1st Lt 5/12/1862. He was mortally wounded 11/3/1863 near Missionary Ridge.  He was sitting on a fence or stump when a 12 pound solid shot struck him between the leg and thigh. The rest of his leg was amputated and he died later. Colonel Bowen ordered Lt. Dekle, to make a coffin for Mitchell. Unfortunately, the coffin was too small, but they crowded him in. He was the only fatality suffered by this company at Murfreesboro.

  His younger brothers, Henry Laurens Mitchell and elder brother Robert B Mitchell also served.

Lt. Mitchell did not survive to receive a Florida Confederate Veteran's Pension.
