Enlisted 6/6/1861 at Tampa for 12 mos.  Appears on a Hospital Muster Roll of Breckinridge's Division Hospital, Marion, Mississippi dated Aug. 31, 1863 (in hospital beginning Aug. 20, 1863)  He was appointed 5th Sgt. 1/12/1864 but was discharged 4/11/64.  Florida Widow's pension shows service to surrender.

Listed on 1860 US Census of Hillsborough County in the City of Tampa residing in the household of William J. Spencer as a printer's apprentice.

Pvt. Cowart's widow, Lucinda. appears on the 1880 US Census of Hillsborough County as head of household in Tampa Town.  She received a Florida Confederate Veteran's widow's pension #A00479 approved 22 Dec. 1908 while residing in Hillsborough County.  John T. Lesley was a witness for Pvt. Cowart's service.
