Four long years did we serve, many hardships we encountered ... It was in the Prison life that he proved beyond a doubt that he was my friend. While on starvation, hungry day and night, some dying from hunger, no hopes of exchange, he had an Uncle inside the Yankee lines and wrote him and it his Uncle sent him a check for $50.00. He was not allowed to handle it but would send an order for what he wanted, and they made him pay five prices for it, a clear out and out steal. He divided equally with me, when I had no way of returning the favor whatever."

He represented Hillsborough County in the State Legislature several times and was a member of Hillsborough Camp #1, Confederate Veterans in 1891.
