3rd Lt. JOHN EDWARD SPENCER

Age at enlistment: 20

Born:  13 August 1841 in Columbia Co.

Died: 30 June 1866 in Hillsborough Co.

Married: unknown

Final Resting Place: Historic Oaklawn Cemetery, Tampa, Hillsborough Co., FL

 

Older brother of Thomas K. Spencer, they enlisted together on 7 June 1861 at Tampa.  He

 resigned 10/22/63. He may have reenlisted in Company A, 2nd Florida Battalion.

*"After the war, he and his brother, Thomas K., reestablished their late older brother William's newspaper, the "Florida Peninsular".  After John's death, Thomas sold the paper to the Republicans and in 1876 started another paper, the "Sunland Tribune" which became the Tampa Tribune. "

 

No further information is known about Lt. Haskins.
 

Lt. Spencer did not survive to receive a Florida Confederate Veteran's Pension.
