Age at enlistment: abt. 20

Born:  30 December 1840 in Florida

Parents:  Father: William Riley HAYS b: 5 NOV 1812
Mother: Feiba ALLEN b: 8 NOV 1815

Marriage: (1)  Fannie G;  (2)  Virginia 22 Oct 1878 (B 30 Apr 1847, Madison, FL)

Children: Hunter H (B abt 1868 in FL). Simmie C. (B 4 May 1873), James W. (B 9 Oct 1876), Haffie Marie (B. abt 1880), Virginia Clare, Medora Madaline and Archer

Died: 7 October 1906 at Greenville, FL

Final Resting Place:  unknown

Attributes:  6'1", black eyes & hair, dark skin

 

Enlisted 10/26/1861 at Shaw's Point. He was detailed as a nurse at Murfreesboro in late 1862 and captured there 1/1/1863. He was sent to the Louisville Military prison 4/27/63 then exchanged in May 1863 in City Point VA. He was captured again 7/3/1864 at Kennesaw, GA and sent to Camp Douglas, OH POW Camp.  He survived the winter and was released on oath 6/16/1865.

Elijah H. Hays appears on the 1870 US Census of Madison Co. FL occupation merchant.

Pvt. Hays' widow, Virginia received a Florida Confederate Veteran's Widows Pension  #A02302 in Madison Co., FL on 12 December 1907, however service was for the 1st FL Inf.
