Enlisted 12/11/1861 in Tampa.  Captured by forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas on 11/25/1863 at the Battle of Missionary Ridge.  Pvt. Cotrell was then transferred to Military Prison in Louisville, Kentucky for exchange, but not exchanged and sent to Rock Island POW Camp, Chicago, IL on December 9, 1863.  He survived the winter but on October 4, 1864, he enlisted for frontier service in the US Army on October 4, 1864.
