The following Florida Veteran is being honored in this project:



PRIVATE JOHN COLLINS

 

Age at enlistment: 29

Born:  112/23/1831 in Lowndes Co., GA

Parents:  Enoch E. and Fatima Knight

Died:  3/3/1900 in Hillsborough Co.

Final Resting Place:  Shiloh Cemetery, Hillsborough Co., FL (near Plant City)

Married:   Sarah Grantham 1851

Children:  Martha Ann (abt. 1852 in Florida), Sarah J (Abt. 1856 in Florida)


Moved to Alachua Co. in November 1843 then settled in settled in Hillsborough Co, in 1855.

Enlisted 5/15/1862 in Hillsborough Co. and served as a cook.   According to the last rolls, he was on detached in Florida driving cattle since 10/16/63.   He was attached to Company B. Munnerlyn's Battalion (Cow Cavalry) and served until the end.

Six brothers served:  Two (Enoch, Jr. and James Newman) in his unit, Hardy, William and Daniel served in Munnerlyn's Battalion (Florida Cow Cavalry) and Samuel K. in Co. B 10th FL Infantry.

After the War, he was a member of United Confederate Veterans Hillsborough Camp #1.  He was involved in Democratic politics with his brother, Hardy.
