PRIVATE JAMES NEWMAN COLLINS - POW

 

Age at enlistment: 20

Born:  10/5/1841 in Lowndes Co., GA

Parents:  Enoch E. and Fatima Knight

Died:  4/18/1919

Final Resting Place:  Shiloh Baptist Church, Plant City, FL

Married:   Keziah Wilder

Children:  Frances (abt. 1857), Charles (abt. 1858), Walter (abt. 1873), Calfrey (abt. 1876)

 


Enlisted 6/6/1861 at Tampa and was appointed 2nd Corporal 6/10/1862. He was captured 11/25/63 at Missionary Ridge and sent to Rock Island POW Camp, Chicago.  Survived two winters there, and was forwarded to New Orleans for exchange 5/3/1865.

Six brothers served:  Two (John M. and Jesse C.) in his unit, Hardy, William and Daniel served in Munnerlyn's Battalion (Florida Cow Cavalry) and Samuel K. in Co. B 10th FL Infantry.
